Amics de la Baldufa (I)
The second day in Barcelona I met the spintop collectors club "Amics de la Baldufa" = "Friends of the Spintop" (I now know that the reason we did not meet the previous day was the Eurocup final ;-) If you have not yet seen their excellent site, check it out. They started in the spring of 1996, have organized lots of events and have published more than 24 issues of their very informative magazine.

If you ever visit, be aware that the street address is misleading: after a relatively long walk from the hotel, carrying my tops and Figaro, I arrived at a . . . construction site! The even numbers on the facing buildings were the correct ones and the following block street numbers were what I expected. It took me a while to figure out that the place was the building standing in a square in the previous block. There, a civic center, they have use of a large room with closets where they store the club belongings.

The six members of club present at the meeting were: Ferran, Dani, Josep, Ton, Carles and Jaume (left to right on this video still). In addition, there were some young guys from the yo-yo club of Barcelona, who contacted me through Pulp; in particular, Jordi, who can do some basic tops tricks. So, in a strange way, I helped these two groups get together which are from the same city but had never met.

Now I know what celebrities must feel: they all had cameras pointing at me at the same time, what was a little disconcerting. They also took lots of pictures of Philippe's tops, Figaro and the Eiffel Tour gyroscope. There is no doubt they are excellent at documenting anything related to tops.

After the meeting they took me for dinner to taste a variety typical catalonian foods, "tapas" style: I was living the "top life" :-)

Re: Amics de la Baldufa (II)
The collectors do the traditional things with tops: teach people how to throw them on the ground and play games. But do not do string tricks and, at least in person, they had never seen somebody performed our tricks, so they were very impressed. I ended up as usual with Figaro, swinging it around-the-world, hoping that it wouldn't fly away and go through the large windows.

But Figaro was by no means the largest top around. Using a drill they spun their three large tops. The floor had some type of polyurethane coating and the tops left nice spirals on them, as you can see. One day somebody should throw that baldufa by hand, keep the whip top spinning with a whip and start the finger top with his fingers . . . probably not!

Re: Re: Amics de la Baldufa (II)
I got lots of spintop goodies from the club (thanks!) including these tops (and T-shirt).

The most common tops over there are wooden ones made by Can-Cels. Most have a tip that ends in a ball but some are pointy. There is a step between the body and the metal tip, which doesn't look very promising for trick play. But they do have a groove before the ball and yesterday I tried rollercoasting the one at the front center (made for their 10th anniversary): it regens very good, really fast! That was a surprise!

I believe the large top is the largest Can-Cels makes (I counted 23 models on their site) and is 7 inches tall. The one with white dots is a souvenir from a museum of wood turning (Museu de la Torneria) that I guess could be an interesting place to visit. The dual tip top (one pointy, one round) is a shape that won a design contest organized by the club and then they had it made. By the way, they are not turners themselves (before I was under the impression they were). The small glass finger tops were made for them by a glass blower.

Difficult but not imposible
Here is a video playing with the comon Can-cels Trompo nº 3.

It is not easy to play. For example I tried the wirewalker aproximately 60 shots, for a good trick.

Good to play traditional floor games, but not for Mexican style.
Spaniard Trompero from Madrid.
That is a really long wirewalker
And the elevator is better than the ones I do with a normal top. I love it when somebody nails a trick with a top that is not optimal.

Another top sculpture
This one I did not see in person. It belongs to Ferran. It was his wife present for his 60th birthday. It weighs 64 kg and measures 136 cm x 106 cm x 100 cm. It was made by artist Viader and you can see more pictures in his website. The sculpture is in Ferran's house in Molló, Girona.

Mmm, one day I want to have a spintop sculpture in front of my house. Hey, Daveid, you are a sculptor, aren't you? ;-)
